Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire Strained as Both Sides Report Weekend Attacks
On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the war is "coming to an end" and expressed willingness to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a third country, provided a peace deal is finalized.
These remarks followed a three-day ceasefire requested by President Donald Trump, which included an exchange of 1,000 prisoners and occurred hours after Moscow's scaled-back Victory Day parade.
Putin clarified that a meeting would strictly serve to sign a final agreement, not to continue negotiations, while blaming Western "globalist elites" for escalating the conflict.
Regarding potential talks with European leaders, Putin identified Germany's former Chancellor Gerhard Schroder as his preferred intermediary, while the Kremlin dismissed Zelenskyy's previous meeting proposals as a "silly joke."
Russia remains stuck in a five-year war that has drained its $3 trillion economy and killed hundreds of thousands, despite Putin's claims of success at the recent parade.
