WSIB Cuts 466 Jobs Across Ontario in 'Difficult Business Decision'
The union says 466 WSIB employees were notified of redundancies as the agency consolidates claim and account management functions.
On Thursday, August 20, 2026, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board announced 466 job cuts across Ontario, with 131 positions eliminated in Windsor as part of a provincial efficiency review.
Ontario Finance Minister and Treasury Board President Peter Bethlenfalvy initiated the agency review, aiming at "ensuring that operations remain sustainable" while consolidating claim and account management functions.
Staff in 10 communities, including Sudbury and Waterloo, face layoffs; employees have a three-week window to decide on relocation to other WSIB offices or accept exit packages.
Ontario Compensation Employees Union president Harry Goslin called the cuts a "gut punch," warning the reductions will increase workloads and delay services for injured workers.
Regional representative Liz Garant warned that service reductions could force vulnerable individuals into poverty, while the union noted 155 additional positions in Waterloo face redundancy within one year.
