Princeton fire department to get new regional training centre
The first phase will add ground-level infrastructure and water training facilities for Princeton and nearby departments, with later simulation props still unfunded.
On Sept. 24, the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board unanimously approved spending $60,000 to build the first phase of a new training centre at the Princeton Fire Department.
Located in the town's industrial park next to the secondary hall, the project will be funded by withdrawing money from the Vermillion Forks Community Forest Corporation Reserve.
Phase 1 includes ground-level infrastructure like natural gas and water storage for practice, while future phases will add props for simulating multi-storey building fires and vehicle rescue events.
Rural Princeton Director Bob Coyne said the facility will serve departments throughout the Similkameen, including Tulameen, Erris, Hayes Creek, Hedley, Eastgate, Keremeos, and the Copper Mountain Mine rescue team.
The centre aims to reduce travel requirements for regional firefighters by providing local training options, though funding for the second and third phases remains pending.
