Cougar Suspected in 36 Livestock Killings on Vancouver Island
Six farms have reported 31 dead animals in a month, and conservation officers say farmers should use fencing and secure livestock overnight.
Farmers in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area are calling for action after a suspected cougar killed 31 livestock animals across six farms, with recent incidents on Garden Road heightening safety concerns.
Reports date back to August, with 36 animals killed across five farms; residents suspect an injured adult cougar and two juveniles are responsible, noting the animal exhibits abnormal hunting behavior by killing more prey than it eats.
Billy Jolicoeur and Garrett Jolicoeur reported three geese killed on their Garden Road farm on September 28, where Garrett noted the cougar has returned for two nights, citing distinctive "chirping" sounds and tracks found nearby.
BCCOS attended a farm on Tuesday, providing guidance on electric fencing and securing animals, though The Jolicoeurs expressed frustration, stating they have not received adequate help despite reporting the cougar's presence.
Residents are concerned that a recent kill site was 10 feet from a children's playhouse; while officials continue to monitor the area, they maintain there are no reports of aggression toward people or pets.
