Possible Human Remains Found in a Home Burned in Upriver Fire in Spokane
Investigators are working with the county medical examiner to confirm the identity and cause of death after the blaze destroyed at least 15 homes.
Investigators found possible human remains Wednesday in a home destroyed by the Upriver Fire, which ignited Tuesday near Camp Sekani in Spokane County.
Deputies and Spokane police officers attempted to evacuate the resident Tuesday afternoon but received no response after finding the front door unlocked, prompting a family welfare check.
Sheriff John Nowels reported crews contacted over 1500 residents in the first four hours and more than 400 people evacuated, while at least 15 homes burned in the 222-acre fire.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office is working with investigators to confirm the identity of the remains, though the cause and manner of death have not yet been publicly released.
Spokane County fire leaders began coordinating late last week to prepare for dangerous fire weather, marking the second time in three years the community has faced such conditions.
