Beneficial genetic changes observed in regular blood donors
Researchers have identified genetic changes in blood stem cells from frequent blood donors that support the production of new, non-cancerous cells. Understanding the differences in the mutations that accumulate in our blood stem cells as we age is important to understand how and why blood cancers develop and hopefully how to intervene before the onset of clinical symptoms.
Not all superheroes wear capes
Generous, volunteer blood donors do more in one hour than most people will do in their entire lives. They are true heroes for people facing heart surgery, cancer, organ transplants, and other critical health conditions that require lifesaving blood transfusions.
We are visiting the Plasmazentrum Wiener Neustadt. Here about 24,000 liters are donated in the year, that is about 30 000 donations per year.
