Pope Francis has died, the Vatican says
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died at age 88 on Monday after serving as pope since 2013 at the Vatican.
His death followed years of health issues including respiratory illnesses, lung surgery, and hospitalization beginning February 14 at Rome's Gemelli hospital.
Francis was the first Latin American and Jesuit pope who advocated for peace, supported migrants, and faced criticism for Argentina's dictatorship and sex abuse scandals.
He expressed solidarity by saying, "I am one of you," highlighting his humility, and criticized those who focus solely on building barriers instead of fostering connections, saying such an attitude is incompatible with Christian values.
His death begins a nine-day mourning period and the secret papal conclave where cardinals under 80 will elect his successor with a two-thirds majority vote.
