Poll: Americans say 'too little' AI regulations
More than 70% want to opt out of AI in medical, legal and education settings, while 75% favor disclosure rules, Johns Hopkins researchers found.
The Center Square Voters Voice Poll found 45% of registered voters believe there is "too little" government regulation of artificial intelligence, while only 13% said there was "too much."
More than 70% of Americans support "right to a human" laws to opt out of AI interactions in medical, legal, and government settings; 75% want notification when interacting with AI systems.
Support for regulation varies across partisan lines, with 53% of Democrats and 37% of Republicans saying there is "too little," while 55% of respondents older than 65 agreed.
Christopher Honey, a computational cognitive neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins University, noted that daily users of AI and those viewing it positively also want regulation, discussed at The Future of Our Realities 2026 conference.
Mike Noble, founder of Noble Predictive Insights, stated the high unsure rate reflects technological novelty, as many voters "havent made up their minds" about appropriate government oversight.
