Police Warn Against 'Door Kicking' Trend After Man Kicks in Door at Washington Home
Deputies say the prank damaged a front door frame and prompted warnings after similar social media challenges have led to deadly confrontations.
On Saturday, May 9, a man kicked in a Gig Harbor home's front door, causing around $2,000 in damage before fleeing with two accomplices. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office linked the incident to a viral "TikTok door kick challenge."
The "door kick challenge" involves participants recording themselves kicking or banging on doors before running away across social media platforms. Deputy Carly Cappetto noted the suspects were "grown men," remarking that adult participation in the trend is unusual.
Body camera footage captured the homeowner describing the incident, while investigators noted the shirtless suspect had a sleeve of tattoos on his right arm. Anyone with information should contact the PCSO at 798-7530.
Tragedy struck last summer in Houston when an 11-year-old boy was killed during a similar prank. Cappetto warned that armed residents may perceive door kicks as break-ins and respond defensively.
Cappetto urged parents to teach children to ask, "Is it potentially going to hurt somebody, or will it cause property damage?" before pranking, advising against any prank if the answer is yes.
