Police to probe two deaths declared critical incidents
Both deaths are being treated as critical incidents, with investigations reviewed by police standards commanders and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, two men died in separate police-related incidents across regional NSW—one following a pursuit near Rankins Springs, the other after a welfare response in Walgett.
Police attended a Wimbledon Road property in Walgett on Monday evening following welfare concerns for a 59-year-old man. Officers located him with a firearm on Tuesday morning, and he died of a self-inflicted wound shortly before 11am.
Highway Patrol Command officers initiated a pursuit of a Mitsubishi with South Australian number plates near Rankins Springs about 10.55am on Tuesday. The vehicle crossed onto the wrong side of the Mid-Western Highway and collided head-on with another car, killing the driver.
Critical Incident Teams established crime scenes at both locations to investigate the circumstances surrounding each death. Investigations will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, with reports prepared for the Coroner.
