Police Sergeant Warns Why You Should Never Do This One Thing on the Motorway
Sgt. Owen Messenger said undertaking is dangerous and can bring 3 penalty points and a £100 fine for careless driving.
Sgt Owen Messenger of Devon and Cornwall Police issued a warning against undertaking on motorways, describing the practice as "really, really dangerous" in a video partnership with GCM.
Because people are not expecting vehicles on the nearside, Sgt Messenger explained that undertaking is generally unsafe; drivers often return to their default left-hand position without checking.
Rule 268 of The Highway Code allows undertaking in congested conditions, but drivers should "only overtake on the right" and "not weave in and out of lanes to overtake."
Drivers caught undertaking could face a fixed penalty notice for careless driving, resulting in three points on their licence and a £100 fine if the offence is considered minor.
GCM and Devon and Cornwall Police created this video to help drivers stay safe, with Sgt Messenger advising motorists to "just drive" in the default nearside position and only overtake when necessary.
