Police to escort fire crews in latest crackdown on Bonfire Night disorder
The operation follows 750 fire service calls last Bonfire Night, with police and firefighters aiming to reduce antisocial behaviour and keep crews safe.
Police Scotland launched Operation Amberlight on Thursday, embedding 20 officers at 10 fire stations across Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, and East Renfrewshire to protect firefighters during Bonfire Night celebrations.
This move expands Scotland's annual Operation Moonbeam, now in its ninth year, following a 2023 disorder surge that left 62 officers injured during previous Bonfire Night operations.
As many as 1,700 officers could be deployed for Bonfire Night, a Celtic match, and potential protests in Glasgow, while authorities monitor 18 Fireworks Control Zones where pyrotechnics are banned.
Supt Ross Aitken stated police will "work collaboratively to secure the scene" with firefighters, assessing criminality and providing support to manage incidents effectively.
SFRS Commander Mark Cleland emphasized a "zero tolerance approach" to staff abuse, while The Scottish SPCA advises pet owners to keep animals indoors during fireworks displays.
