Police probe alleged assault on coach of Australian tennis player in Birmingham
Police say no arrests have been made as investigators review an allegation that a tournament staff member assaulted James McCabe’s father and coach.
West Midlands Police are investigating an alleged assault at the Lexus Birmingham Open on Monday, June 1, after receiving a report of a man being assaulted at a venue in Sir Harrys Road, Birmingham.
The incident followed a dispute over practice court usage between Patrick, coach to Australian tennis player James McCabe, and a staff member at Edgbaston Priory Club on Monday morning.
McCabe claimed his father was "followed, physically handled by a staff member, and left in pain afterwards." The Lawn Tennis Association, ATP, and Edgbaston Priory Club confirmed an ongoing investigation on Wednesday.
Patrick went to hospital following the incident, while McCabe was eliminated from the tournament by Kamil Majchrzak on Wednesday; no arrests have been made and police enquiries remain ongoing.
The Lexus Birmingham Open is the first event of the British grass-court season, featuring ATP Challenger and WTA 125 tours, with Wimbledon beginning later this month on June 29.
