Police escorting students to school after B.C. bear attack that killed two
Police are increasing patrols and offering voluntary rides home as authorities search for the animal or animals involved, officials said.
On Thursday, Mounties in Bella Coola, British Columbia, began escorting students to school following a suspected grizzly bear attack that killed Jenny Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed.
Authorities imposed a voluntary 8 p.m. curfew in the region, about 1,000 kilometres north of Vancouver, while increasing night patrols and offering "voluntary rides" home for local youth.
Comparing bear DNA from this scene to samples from a grizzly attack in Bella Coola last November, the Conservation Officer Service is investigating if the same animal injured three students.
The Nuxalk Nation held a drum circle Wednesday to honour the victims, while a fundraiser created by relative Mary Melissa Smith showcased the community's compassion and support.
Deadly bear attacks remain rare in British Columbia, though there have been at least 10 fatalities since the 1990s, including this week's incident that claimed the lives of a mother and daughter.
