Police chase goes horribly wrong, man fighting for life
An 80-year-old driver was cut free and taken to hospital as major crash investigators examine the collision and a 27-year-old suspect was arrested.
On Monday, October 12, 2026, an 80-year-old man was left in critical condition after his white Hyundai Accent collided with an unmarked police vehicle at the intersection of South Street and Beasley Road in Leeming around 10:50 AM.
Police were pursuing a stolen grey Renault Koleos, allegedly taken from a White Gum Valley home earlier that morning, when the unmarked vehicle struck the Hyundai at the intersection.
Witness Tradie Owen Fallis described the crash as "frightening," noting the engine was ejected at least 30m from the car. Firefighters cut the elderly man from his vehicle before he was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital.
Two police officers were transported to Fiona Stanley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a 27-year-old man alleged to be the driver of the stolen Renault was arrested on Cockburn Road after fleeing on foot.
Major crash officers are investigating the incident after a police helicopter tracked the suspect to a Coogee caravan park, and authorities have closed South Street westbound between Vahland Avenue and Beasley Road.
