Lithuanian Border Guards Find Tunnel From Belarus
Border guards said the 1.5-meter-deep passage had no Lithuanian exit and may have been built to move irregular migrants across the border.
- On Wednesday last week, Lithuania's State Border Guard Service discovered a tunnel leading from Belarus into the southeastern Varėna district after detecting ground vibrations indicating underground digging.
- The tunnel, 1.5 metres deep and 3.3 feet in diameter, had no exit on the Lithuanian side; VSAT head Rustamas Liubajevas alleged Belarusian authorities may be actively helping migrants build such passages.
- Polish authorities assisted the search by providing specialist equipment, while specialists from the Middle East with a "high level of expertise" helped design the tunnels, according to Polish officials.
- Following the discovery, Liubajevas said border guards identified "dozens" of other locations where similar tunnels could exist, citing wooden supports inside the structure as evidence of organized Belarusian involvement.
- Similar tunnels discovered on the Belarusian-Polish border in 2025 led The Telegraph to describe them as escalation in the Kremlin's hybrid war against Europe, extending Lithuania's unauthorized migrant crisis since 2021.
