PlayStation 5 Pro is getting a big graphics upgrade with AMD tech

  • In a PlayStation Blog post, Cerny announced Resident Evil Requiem, the first to use the updated PSSR, which is 'rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks' and will include an 'Enhance PSSR Image Quality' toggle.
  • Built through Sony's Project Amethyst with AMD, the updated PSSR algorithm uses AMD's FSR technology with six months of refinement, delayed by the PS5 Pro's older RDNA 2 GPU microarchitecture.
  • Under the hood, the upscaler PSSR analyzes pixels, and Ijuin said, 'For example, each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon,' in Requiem, boosting detail.
  • To get the improvements, users must enable the 'Enhance PSSR Image Quality' system toggle, and Sony confirmed multiple PS5 Pro games will be upgraded in March.
  • After a $750 launch close to 16 months ago, Sony positions the upgraded PSSR as a way to extend the current console generation and offer PC-like visuals without a costly PC upgrade.
