Photos show elaborate preparations for Thailand’s Royal Barges Procession
More than 2,000 oarsmen have trained for months as the 52-barge procession carries Thailand's royal family to a Buddhist ceremony.
On Friday, Thailand will hold the Royal Barge Procession, where King Maha Vajiralongkorn will lead a fleet of 52 intricately decorated vessels down Bangkok's Chao Phraya River.
This year's ceremony marks an auspicious 12-year cycle for Queen Suthida and coincides with the Buddhist Kathin ceremony following the end of Buddhist Lent.
More than 2,000 oarsmen from the Royal Thai Navy have spent months training in unison, mastering traditional boat songs to coordinate the fleet's precise formation.
Vajiralongkorn and Suthida will travel with royal family members to the Wat Arun Ratchawararam temple, completing the centuries-old ceremonial journey.
The Fine Arts Department restored the wooden barges, which feature elaborate designs depicting mythical creatures including the multi-headed Naga and the Hindu deity Narayana.
