See it: NASA rover captures rare phenomenon for first time on surface of Mars
A NASA rover on Mars has recorded a rare phenomenon for the first time on the surface of the planet. It has recorded the sounds of electrical sparks and mini-sonic booms caused by dust devils. The recordings, picked up by the rover Perseverance, confirm decades-old theories that these occurrences could happen on the Red Planet.NASA’S MARS ROVER REVEALS DIVERSITY OF WILD WEATHER ON THE RED PLANETBefore the Perseverance Mars rover landed on the pl…
NASA rover hears electric crackles inside Mars dust devils
Pasadena CA (JPL) Dec 04, 2025 NASA's Perseverance rover has directly detected tiny electrical sparks and associated shock waves inside Martian dust devils, confirming that the Red Planet's ubiquitous whirlwinds can generate "mini-lightning" through charged dust. Using the SuperCam instrument's microphone and electromagnetic sensors, the team identified brief crackles and pressure spikes that reveal triboelectric discharges o
Thanks to a microphone installed on the SuperCam instrument, the Perseverance rover captured 55 electric shocks in dust vortexes. According to this new study, these mini-flashes could have consequences on the chemistry of the Martian atmosphere and thus on the search for life.
