Woman Killed in Vaughan Hit-and-Run Was Live-in Caregiver on Her Way to Work: Police
Police say the driver fled after striking a 60-year-old Richmond Hill woman, and investigators are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage.
A 60-year-old Richmond Hill woman died in a Sunday hit-and-run in Vaughan, York Regional Police said. She was found Tuesday afternoon by a passerby near Pine Valley Drive and Major Mackenzie Drive.
The victim, a live-in caregiver, was walking northbound along the shoulder of Pine Valley Drive around 8:30 p.m. Sunday after exiting a bus. The poorly lit road lacks sidewalks, contributing to her isolation.
A passerby noticed the woman's suitcase on the road Tuesday afternoon just before 3 p.m., leading to discovery of her body in nearby grass. Investigators believe the driver would have known they struck someone, given the impact.
York police are urging the driver to turn themselves in, as no vehicle description is available. Officers are also asking repair shops to report any vehicles showing damage consistent with a pedestrian collision.
Officers closed Pine Valley Drive between Major Mackenzie Drive and Ballantyne Boulevard to canvass for witnesses and video evidence. Authorities encourage the public to contact police or Crime Stoppers with any relevant information.
