Parrott close to Spanish move as Real Betis swoop
The Republic of Ireland striker is coming off 16 league goals in 28 games and could bolster Betis for Champions League play.
On Tuesday, reports indicated Republic of Ireland striker Troy Parrott is nearing a €20m transfer to Champions League-bound Real Betis from AZ Alkmaar, with an agreement between the clubs now close.
Manuel Pellegrini, the 72-year-old manager, is a key draw for Parrott, who is finalizing a five-year contract with an initial fee of €16m plus around €4m in add-ons.
Despite heavy interest from West Ham, the 24-year-old forward pushed Alkmaar to accept the Spanish offer, accepting a lower salary to fit within La Liga's salary cap.
Following the move, the Dubliner may compete for playing time with Colombian striker Cucho Hernández, while North Dublin club Belvedere FC could receive around €200,000 under FIFA's solidarity scheme.
The move continues a tradition of Irish players in Spain, including Michael Robinson and John Aldridge, as Betis aims to build on a fifth-place finish that qualified them for the Champions League.
