Paris slashes speed limit on ring road to 50km/h

The city of Paris passed a decree on Monday dropping the speed limit on the city's ring road - the péripherique - despite pushback from local police and regional authorities.

As of this Tuesday, the speed is reduced on this axis around Paris. Other major French cities have also carried out experiments, but not necessarily conclusive.

The new speed and carpooling rules will be gradually phased in between October 1 and October 10. The change affects a messy knot of Parisian road regulations.

STORY - This measure, which is stirring up the anger of users, elected officials and authorities, comes into force on Tuesday for a first section, before being generalized on October 10. A motorists' association is going to go to court to challenge the municipal decree.

Since August 2021, motorcyclists have been able to travel between two lanes on a road where the maximum authorized speed is greater than or equal to 70km/h. With the passage of the Paris ring road at 50 km/h, inter-file traffic for two-wheelers is therefore no longer authorized on this lane.

While the Paris ring road is gradually increasing to 50km/h from this Tuesday to reduce noise, accidents and air pollution, France Bleu is taking stock of the regulations in force in other major French cities.
