Parents Charged After Toddler Gains Access to Wolf Exhibit at Zoo
Police said the parents walked 25 to 30 feet away and were looking at cellphones when the child entered a restricted wolf area.
- On Saturday, authorities charged parents Carrie Sortor, 43, and Stephen Wilson, 61, with endangering the welfare of children after their 17-month-old child accessed a restricted wolf exhibit at ZooAmerica in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
- Evidence showed the parents walked about 25 to 30 feet away to a seating area and appeared to be using their cellphones as the child squeezed through a small opening in a wooden barrier perimeter fence.
- After the child reached the primary metal enclosure, a wolf instinctively grabbed his hand with its mouth. "Several bystanders intervened and helped pull the child away," police said.
- ZooAmerica noted the wolf's response was "consistent with natural animal behavior, and was not a sign of aggression." Derry Township Police Chief Garth Warner stated signs advise parents to closely supervise children.
- The child suffered minor injuries and was reunited with his family. Court records indicate Sortor and Wilson await a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 28.
