Parents Accused of Killing 1-Day-Old Baby While in Maternity Room

Investigators said the infant died from multiple traumatic injuries and that both parents failed to alert staff when he was in distress.

  • On Tuesday, Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams announced that Kevin Canaan, 28, and Yeniffer Tavarez-Cepeda, 25, were charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of children following their newborn son's death at Tower Health Reading Hospital.
  • West Reading Police responded to the maternity ward on May 2 after employees discovered a seemingly healthy newborn in unexpected medical distress inside a private recovery room. Investigators determined the infant suffered injuries while under the parents' exclusive supervision.
  • Medical personnel at Penn State Hershey Medical Center told investigators the infant's injuries "were consistent with physical abuse and were not a result of the birthing process," Adams said. An autopsy at the Dauphin County Forensic Center confirmed death from multiple traumatic injuries.
  • Officials determined the parents failed to alert hospital staff while the infant was in medical distress. Following arraignment before District Judge Carissa L. Johnson, Canaan and Tavarez-Cepeda were committed to Berks County Jail without bail.
  • A joint investigation by Berks County Detectives and the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force led to the arrests, with both defendants remaining in custody as the legal proceedings continue. The case underscores investigative coordination across multiple agencies.
