Odisha Forms Technical Team to Monitor Care of the Apes in Nandankanan
The panel will guide hand-rearing and medical monitoring as officials say the non-native animals need round-the-clock care.
- On Saturday, the Odisha government formed a five-member technical committee to oversee the care of five baby orangutans rescued from Balasore district. The panel will assess welfare issues and provide guidance for their upkeep.
- Authorities rescued the five orangutans from Bichitrapur forest on September 8, prompting the Odisha Police's Special Task Force and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau to intensify their investigation into international wildlife smuggling, examining 55 CCTV cameras.
- The orangutans are housed at Nandankanan Zoological Park, where three caretakers and doctors monitor them round-the-clock. Aditya Acharya, head of the Wildlife Treatment Centre, said caretakers are "like new mothers" to the infants.
- Chief Wildlife Warden Prem Kumar Jha stated the committee has an initial six-month tenure and includes veterinary experts from Mysuru Zoo, the Wildlife Institute of India, and the Centre for Wildlife Health. The panel ensures compliance with the Wildlife Protection Act.
- Empowered to consult national and international wildlife experts, the committee will facilitate necessary care for the rescued animals. Officials are engaging organizations like Vantara to provide high-quality support and ensure optimal outcomes.
