Walker Buehler’s Family Situation Simplified Padres’ Decision to Start Robbie Ray in Game 1 of NLDS
Randy Vasquez replaces Buehler on the NLDS roster, and the right-hander can return for Game 3 after the expected birth of his second child.
- On Saturday, the San Diego Padres placed right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler on the Paternity List hours before the National League Division Series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.
- Buehler's wife, McKenzie, is expected to give birth to their second child Saturday, prompting his temporary absence from the active roster.
- Right-Hander Randy Vasquez will take Buehler's roster spot during his absence, while left-hander Robbie Ray gets the Game 1 start at American Family Field.
- Under MLB rules, Buehler is permitted to be away for a maximum of three days, making him eligible to rejoin the team before Tuesday's Game 3 at Petco Park.
- Manager Craig Stammen noted Buehler has strong "playoff pedigree" and will play "a big role in this series at some point," despite the immediate absence.
