Padres Rookie Ethan Salas, 20, Becomes Youngest Catcher in MLB History with a Multi-Homer Game
The 20-year-old rookie drove in three runs and topped Butch Wynegar’s 1976 mark for youngest catcher with a multi-homer game.
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, San Diego Padres rookie Ethan Salas became the youngest catcher in MLB history with a multi-homer game, leading the Padres to a 9-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies in Denver.
At 20 years, 107 days old, Salas surpassed the record held by Butch Wynegar, who was 20 years, 192 days when he hit two home runs for Minnesota on September 22, 1976.
Salas launched a 426-foot solo shot in the second inning off Mason Adams, then added a two-run homer in the fifth inning to help seal the victory.
Manager Craig Stammen praised Salas's performance, saying, 'He played his way to have this opportunity' despite the rookie's early struggles in his debut.
San Diego holds an 83-69 record, maintaining a 2 1/2-game lead over Arizona for the final National League wild-card spot as the Padres seek playoff positioning.
