Overweight offshore workers could lose their jobs under new rules, industry body OEUK warns
OEUK says the cap is needed for helicopter evacuations and safety equipment, while 241 to 300 workers could lose offshore jobs.
From Sunday, Offshore Energies UK will ban workers weighing more than 124kg from offshore flights to ensure safety during emergency helicopter evacuations.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency warned that rescue winches cannot safely lift heavier people; the industry previously enlarged lifeboats and adjusted seating to compensate.
Since the policy was announced last year, workers over the limit fell from about 2,200 to fewer than 250, with OEUK reporting 60% of staff on one platform used weight-loss drugs.
An estimated 241-300 workers remain above the limit and face potential job loss; the RMT union criticized the policy as a "convenient mechanism" to dismiss staff without proper compensation.
Graham Skinner, OEUK health and safety manager, emphasized the 124kg limit is non-negotiable for winch safety, warning that workers who do not comply may ultimately face termination.
