Barca Defensive Blow - Xavi Espart Out Until Next Year After Suffering Ankle Damage in Hard Aurelien Tchouameni Challenge
Barcelona said the 19-year-old defender suffered syndesmosis damage after a collision and will miss key LaLiga and Champions League matches.
On Monday, Barcelona confirmed that defender Xavi Espart will miss seven weeks of action after sustaining a syndesmosis joint injury in his right ankle during Sunday's El Clasico defeat to Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old sustained the damage in the 30th minute following a robust sliding challenge from Aurelien Tchouameni, attempting to play through the pain before being forced off the field.
Barcelona's defensive resources are severely stretched with Espart joining Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, and Dani Olmo on the injury list, leaving only four defenders available for selection.
Espart will miss upcoming fixtures including Saturday's match against Alaves, the November 3 Champions League clash with Aston Villa, and the November 8 trip to Atletico Madrid.
Before the injury, Espart had been enjoying a breakout season for the LaLiga leaders, contributing to four goals with two strikes and two assists after Coach Hansi Flick reconverted him into a full-back.
