Ottawa Redblacks to start rookie Bryson Barnes versus Toronto Argonauts
Barnes becomes Ottawa’s third starting quarterback this season as the 0-16 Redblacks look to end a winless year.
Rookie Bryson Barnes will make his first start Friday night when the Ottawa Redblacks host the Toronto Argonauts in CFL action.
Head coach/GM Ryan Dinwiddie announced the decision following Wednesday's practice, naming Barnes as the team's third starting quarterback this season after veteran quarterbacks Jake Maier and McLeod Bethel-Thompson.
Used primarily in short-yardage situations, the six-foot-one, 213-pound quarterback has rushed 41 times for 95 yards and nine touchdowns over 14 games while completing 10-of-13 passes for 110 yards.
Barnes is expected to start Ottawa's regular-season finale in Hamilton on October 24, giving the club an opportunity to evaluate the rookie in a starting role.
The 25-year-old played collegiately at Utah and Utah State, providing the foundation for his transition to the CFL as he takes on this expanded professional opportunity.
