OpenAI announces restricted-access cybersecurity model
The model will go to thousands of verified defenders and hundreds of teams as OpenAI tries to limit misuse, the company said.
- On Tuesday, OpenAI announced it will release its latest GPT-5 model to a limited number of partners through its Trusted Access for Cyber scheme.
- Anthropic restricted access to its Claude Mythos model last week, launching Project Glasswing to limit distribution to 40 major tech players amid fears of an AI-enabled arms race.
- OpenAI's GPT-5 is "trained to be cyber-permissive," company officials said, making it available to "the highest tiers" of verified defenders and teams.
- "Instead, we aim to enable as many legitimate defenders as possible," OpenAI said, rejecting central gatekeeping in favor of automated systems validating trustworthy users.
- These restricted releases reflect industry concerns about an AI-enabled arms race, as both companies aim to provide defenders a head start in fixing vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.
