Voters Across Ontario Head to the Polls for Municipal Elections
More than 11.8 million voters are eligible as close mayoral races in Toronto, Ottawa and Mississauga head to the ballot box, AMO says.
On Monday, voters across more than 400 Ontario municipalities head to the polls to elect local representatives, with competitive mayoral contests in Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Hamilton, Thunder Bay, Oshawa, and Cambridge.
Across Ontario, about 6,663 candidates are vying for 2,800 municipal positions including mayor, city councillor, and school board trustee. Ten candidates seek to replace Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boshcoff, who is not seeking re-election.
A Liaison Strategies poll described Toronto's race between incumbent Olivia Chow and challenger Brad Bradford as a "statistical dead heat," with Chow at 47 per cent and Bradford at 49 per cent. Ottawa's contest shows incumbent Mark Sutcliffe leading Jeff Leiper.
Mississauga set a record for advance voter turnout earlier this month, with more than 44,000 ballots cast between October 6 and 11, a 57 per cent increase from 2022. Candidates across Ontario have sparred over strong mayor powers granted by Premier Doug Ford.
Voters in Hamilton face a rematch between incumbent Andrea Horwath and Keanin Loomis, who lost the 2022 race by about 1,600 votes. Eight school boards remain under provincial supervision, and cities face infrastructure challenges, including Thunder Bay's $30.6 million annual deficit.
