Ford Government Hopes to Burn More Garbage, Build More Landfills
The bill would speed approvals for new landfills and energy-from-waste plants as Ontario faces seven to 10 years of landfill capacity.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Environment Minister Todd McCarthy introduced the Building Ontario Faster Act to expedite approvals for new landfills and energy-from-waste facilities amid rising waste capacity concerns.
President Donald Trump recently imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Canadian trash, increasing export costs. Ontario's landfills face capacity limits within seven to 10 years, prompting the province to secure domestic disposal options.
Ontario currently exports 27 per cent of its commercial waste, totaling 3.44 million tonnes, to the United States. McCarthy indicated the province may need to force municipalities to host new waste facilities.
Green Party leader Mike Schreiner criticized the move, arguing the government prioritizes disposal over environmental protection. He told Canada's National Observer the strategy risks creating a "toxic air pollution crisis" in affected communities.
McCarthy promised to uphold environmental assessment standards and monitor emissions from new waste sites. He suggested some communities might accept facilities if located sufficiently far from residential areas.
