Democrat Teresa Benitez-Thompson Wins Election to U.S. House in Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District
Benitez-Thompson won with 50.37% of the vote, giving Democrats a seat Republicans had held since the district was created in 1983.
Democrat Teresa Benitez-Thompson won Nevada's 2nd Congressional District on Wednesday, defeating Republican David Flippo in a historic upset that flipped the seat blue for the first time in its 45-year history.
Flippo's campaign faced significant controversy over allegations of misrepresenting his military record and personal finances. Former Republican Rep. Mark Amodei declined to support the candidate following these disclosures.
With more than 272,000 ballots counted, Benitez-Thompson leads by 16,124 votes. The result signals a dramatic shift in the conservative-leaning district, which President Donald Trump carried by 14 points in 2024.
Declaring victory Wednesday, Benitez-Thompson pledged to "fight every single day to protect our wallets, our water, and our way of life." She promised to represent all constituents regardless of party affiliation.
To engage residents, Benitez-Thompson intends to hold 100 town halls or public events during her first term. She plans to ensure Northern Nevada's specific needs remain a priority in Washington.
