Ondo Assembly Passes State Police Bill, Says It’s Long Overdue
Lawmakers said the change will help security agencies respond faster and improve intelligence gathering as 24 state assemblies back the constitutional amendment.
On Monday, the Ondo State House of Assembly passed the Constitution Bill, 2026, to establish State Police Services in the country.
Ondo became the 25th state to endorse the decentralized policing framework, officially satisfying the constitutional two-thirds majority requirement for enactment across Nigeria.
Speaker Olamide Oladiji and House Leader Olatunji Oshati emphasized that state policing will improve intelligence-led operations and grassroots security coordination with community stakeholders.
Following the vote, Oladiji directed Clerk Benjamin Jaiyeola to transmit the bill to the National Assembly alongside the state legislature's formal observations.
Proponents believe the dual policing system will ease operational pressure on federal structures, addressing persistent security challenges currently confronting Nigeria.
