Ole Miss basketball resolves tampering case with no further NCAA penalties
The NCAA accepted Ole Miss’s prior sanctions and said Chris Beard was not personally involved in the recruiting violations.
On Friday, the NCAA announced it will not penalize Ole Miss basketball coach Chris Beard, determining he "was not personally involved in the violations, was not aware of the impermissible contact and promoted an atmosphere for compliance."
Former assistant Wes Flanigan committed tampering violations by holding impermissible recruiting conversations with an advisor of a student-athlete from another school who had not entered the transfer portal.
Penalties already served by Ole Miss over two seasons include two years of probation, a $455,000 fine, and one-week bans on recruiting communications and prospective player visits.
Under the settlement, athletic director Keith Carter and a senior official with the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation were required to attend an NCAA rules seminar, while the university must end its booster relationship for two years.
Ole Miss stated it is pleased to have resolved the matter, confirming there is "no ongoing or future impact on our basketball program" or any other athletics operations moving forward.
