- Gilson had secured an emergency protective order against Duffey on June 10, extended through August 24. Court records mandated Duffey stay 100 yards away from his estranged wife and leave their shared home.

- A child in the home called 911 shortly after 11 p.m., with dispatchers reporting a woman "screaming and crying" in the background. Police discovered the scene after the call.
- Shortly before the shooting, Gilson posted a TikTok video using a documentary trend to allege her husband was a pedophile. Her video reached over 10.2 million views, and a fundraiser supporting her two children has been launched.
