Scientists Built a Smartphone Gadget That Can Spot Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ – channelnews
A tiny sensor that connects to your smartphone has the potential to make testing for ‘forever chemicals’ much easier. Researchers in Japan have developed a compact gadget that can detect extremely low concentrations of PFAS chemicals in water, paving the way for cheaper and more accessible contamination testing, without the need to rely on labs. The prototype, developed by scientists at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), co…
Portable device accurately and rapidly detects PFAS in water
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals known for their exceptional resistance to degradation, earning them the nickname "forever chemicals." These persistent substances can accumulate in water, soil and living organisms, raising concerns about their potential impacts on human health and the environment.
A research team at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) announced on the 26th that they have developed a portable detection device that can easily measure the amount of perfluorooctanesulfate compounds (PFAS) contained in water simply by connecting it directly to a smartphone.
