Petrobras Finds More Oil in Brazil's Amazon Mouth Basin

Petrobras said the deeper drilling found another oil-bearing interval, but it has not disclosed volumes or commercial viability.

  • On Friday, the state-run oil company Petrobras reported a second oil-bearing interval in its Morpho well, situated in block FZA-M-59 off the coast of Brazil's Amapa state.
  • Targeting the Amazon Mouth Basin to replace declining pre-salt reserves, Petrobras is exploring new frontiers where government planning studies estimate a recoverable potential of up to 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
  • The BRSA-1405-APS well, located about 175 km offshore in 2,886 metres of water, was evaluated by Petrobras using electric logs, rock signs, and fluid samples to confirm the latest interval.
  • Petrobras has not yet published a commercial assessment or flow rates for the find, nor has the company established a public timetable for the three additional wells planned to begin in January.
  • Citing concerns over a January spill of more than 18,000 litres of drilling fluid, federal prosecutors are seeking to halt drilling operations to demand new environmental studies.
