Ohio man convicted in US of lying about role in Rwandan genocide
A federal jury found Eric Nshimiye guilty of perjury and obstruction after prosecutors said he hid his role in the 1994 genocide.
A federal jury in Boston on Tuesday found Eric Nshimiye guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice for lying about his role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide during a 2019 trial.
Prosecutors alleged Nshimiye falsified information to conceal his participation in the massacre of 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus by the hard-line Hutu regime during three months of slaughter in Rwanda.
During the 2019 trial of former classmate Jean Leonard Teganya, Nshimiye denied belonging to the National Revolutionary Movement for Development or participating in violence while a medical student in Butare.
Defense attorney Kurt Kerns argued the charges were based on "fabricated accusations," claiming Nshimiye was prosecuted only after testifying as a character witness for Teganya.
Nshimiye, a United States citizen since 2003, faces sentencing on January 26 after living in the country since 1995 and working as an engineer for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co in Uniontown, Ohio.
