- Sunday night, multiple 911 hang-up calls from 700 North and 200 East prompted officers to respond, with Bate previously charged in May 2024 at the same address.
- When Bate emerged, he opened fire on Sergeant Sorensen and Officer Estrada with a high-powered rifle, fatally wounding both Sunday night.
- Bystanders convinced Bate to drop his weapon, leading to his arrest; the deputy and police service dog are recovering in fair condition.
- Utah Gov. Spencer Cox ordered flags at half-staff and called the incident “terrible and tragic” as a solemn procession took place on August 18 from Taylorsville through Garland to Logan.
