Odisha Rejects Dara Singh’s Remission Plea in Graham Staines Murder Case, Tells SC
The Supreme Court gave Dara Singh two weeks to challenge the decision after he sought release citing more than 24 years in prison.
- On Thursday, the Odisha government informed the Supreme Court it rejected the remission plea of Ravindra Pal alias Dara Singh, who is serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two sons.
- A mob led by Singh attacked Staines and his two sons, Philip and Timothy, while they slept in their station wagon, setting the vehicle on fire at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district on January 22, 1999.
- Contending he had served over 25 years in jail, Singh approached the Supreme Court in 2024, claiming to have "repented" for actions taken in a fit of "youthful rage."
- A bench of Justices Manoj Misra and Vijay Bishnoi granted Singh's counsel two weeks to file an amendment application, instructing them to "take whatever grounds you want to take to challenge it" before posting the matter after three weeks.
- The Supreme Court noted the matter, pending for over two years, could not be kept "lingering" forever and would have to be decided, emphasizing the urgency of resolving Singh's challenge.

Odisha rejects Dara Singh’s remission plea in Graham Staines murder case, tells SC
Odisha rejected Ravindra Pal alias Dara Singh's plea for early release. The Supreme Court granted Singh two weeks to amend his petition.
