NYT: Mob Informant May Have Helped O.J. Simpson at 1994 Murder Scene
Newly unsealed records say Joseph Ippolito gave federal authorities information on the killings, but prosecutors did not use it before the 1995 trial ended.
On Sunday, The New York Times reported that newly unsealed documents from 30 years ago reveal Joseph Ippolito, a convicted drug smuggler, provided federal authorities information about the 1994 Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman killings.
Ippolito, an associate of Simpson confidante Cowlings, escaped from a Florida prison in 1994 and fled to Southern California, where he managed an Italian restaurant in Santa Monica before his death in 2006.
Sam Ippolito initially told the NYT he disposed of a bag containing a large object and bloody clothes after Joseph went out to "help a friend" on the night of the murders, though he later recanted.
Federal authorities shared Ippolito's information with prosecutors during the 1994 criminal trial, but the evidence arrived near trial's end and was disregarded; he was never called to testify.
The Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Office stated the Simpson case "remains an open and ongoing investigation," noting detectives will follow any new investigatory leads that emerge.
