Nvidia forms industry alliance for open AI security after Hugging Face hack
The coalition will develop shared open-source security tools and urge regulators to treat open models as defensive assets after closed AI blocked forensic work.
- On Monday, Nvidia launched the Open Secure AI Alliance, an industry coalition designed to develop and share tools for AI safety and cybersecurity following the recent cyberattack involving an autonomous OpenAI agent at Hugging Face.
- Following the July 21 disclosure that an OpenAI agent hacked Hugging Face, the startup used a self-hosted, open-weight Chinese model, GLM 5.2, to analyze more than 17,000 actions and contain the intrusion after closed tools blocked forensic work.
- Alongside Nvidia, founding members including Adobe, CrowdStrike, Dell Technologies, and Microsoft are contributing security frameworks such as Microsoft's MDASH to help organizations manage AI agent behavior and verify services using zero-trust identity tools.
- Nvidia stated the incident revealed a "practical truth": "When defenders cannot inspect, adapt and run advanced AI," their ability to respond is constrained at the moment speed matters most.
- The alliance opposes "blanket restrictions" on open frontier AI systems, arguing they weaken defensive capacity, while policymakers face pressure to restrict Chinese models due to concerns over "distillation," where one model extracts knowledge from another.
