Nursery worker jailed over ‘shocking’ death of toddler while he slept
Kimberley Cookson was jailed for 3 years and 4 months after CCTV showed her restraining Noah Sibanda to force him to sleep.
- On Thursday, Fairytales Day Nursery Limited, director Deborah Latewood, and worker Kimberley Cookson received sentences at Wolverhampton Crown Court for the death of 14-month-old Noah Sibanda on December 9, 2022.
- Noah died after being tightly wrapped in a sleeping bag, placed face down in an indoor tepee with a blanket over his head, and physically restrained for seven minutes to force sleep.
- CCTV footage revealed habitual unsafe sleeping practices at the nursery. Prosecutor John Elvidge KC added: "Kimberley Cookson's negligence was gross. That means it was truly exceptionally bad."
- Cookson was jailed for three years and four months. Victim impact statements from Noah's parents, Masi and Thulani Sibanda, revealed their "naïve trust" in the nursery and enduring grief.
- The now-closed nursery's admissions of corporate manslaughter underscore systemic failures in childcare oversight. This case has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of safe-sleep guidance across the sector.
