Portugal wary of Trump's NATO policy in pick of fighter jets
Portugal is considering replacing its F-16 fighter jets with European models rather than F-35s due to concerns about geopolitical uncertainty and US President Donald Trump's NATO policies.
Outgoing Defence Minister Nuno Melo expressed worries that the unpredictable nature of Trump's policies could impact Portugal's defense acquisitions and limit access to software updates and spare parts for F-35s.
Portugal's decision follows the collapse of its center-right government, necessitating a reassessment of the predictability of allies in defense acquisitions.
The European Commission is urging EU countries to identify pressing defense needs and prioritize European defense production to counter potential threats.
Portugal is considering all options - American F-35 or European aircraft - to replace the American F-16 aircraft that currently equip its air force. According to the Defense Ministry in Lisbon, the latter will soon no longer be usable, News.ro reports.
The Portuguese government has specified that the decision will take into account "the current geopolitical context (which) shows the need to strengthen the European defence pillar of NATO".
