Two Ministers in the Running to Be Nunavut’s Next Premier Today
Nunavut MLAs use secret ballots to elect leadership and cabinet members under a consensus government after a record low voter turnout in the Oct. 27 election.
- On Nov. 18, 2025 the Nunavut Leadership Forum began at 10 a.m. in the legislature chamber, starting with the Speaker's election and secret-ballot votes for premier and executive council.
- With only two of 22 electorates filled, Nunavut's consensus-style system requires MLAs to elect a premier and up to eight cabinet ministers from among themselves, as the Aggu riding awaits a Dec. 15 by-election.
- David Joanasie was chosen as Speaker while contenders David Akeeagok, MLA since 2017, and John Main, MLA and former health minister, made pitches; Main would be Nunavut's first non-Inuk premier if selected.
- The incoming premier will assign cabinet portfolios among the eight other cabinet members in the days after the forum, and residents can watch live on Bell channel 513, Shaw channel 181 or Iqaluit FM.
- Following an Nov. 18, 2025, territorial election noted for lowest turnout, today's forum carries added importance under consensus governments in Nunavut and the N.W.T., a practice unique in Canada.
