Mumps Outbreak Hits San Diego State Football Team Before Pac 12 Opener
The university is offering free measles, mumps and rubella booster shots as health officials trace possible spread beyond the team.
San Diego State announced Wednesday that mumps cases on its football team have reached 14 confirmed and one probable case ahead of Saturday's Pac-12 debut against Texas State at Snapdragon Stadium.
Initial cases were identified on Sept. 18 when the university confirmed three cases and two probable infections connected to a single athletic team. San Diego County Public Health Services has since implemented daily screenings and contact tracing.
Because symptoms can develop 12 to 25 days after exposure, SDSU is hosting a free MMR booster clinic today, Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Calpulli Center to address potential spread.
Citing federal privacy laws, SDSU Coach Sean Lewis declined to identify affected players, though Wednesday's availability report listed 32 total players with 17 marked as doubtful or out for Saturday.
While only one associated case exists outside the football team, Lewis stated that "guys have got to be ready to step into the light" as the Aztecs navigate the health crisis before kickoff.
