New South Wales to Require New Data Centers Run 40% on Wind Energy Under New Framework
On Monday, Treasurer Daniel Mookhey announced the NSW Data Centre Policy Framework, requiring builders to fund additional renewable energy and water supply to prevent costs from shifting to households.
With more than 60 data centres already operating or under construction in NSW and 19 more in the planning pipeline, the government determined it was time to set regulations for resource-intensive consumption.
Builders meeting performance measures receive a 75-day assessment process; Mookhey said power purchasing agreements with renewable providers help ensure "less bills for households."
Local debate centers on a CloudCarrier proposal for a 703.2-megawatt gas-fired power station at 30 Douglas Road, Moss Vale, located just 500 metres from homes; Councillor Heather Champion warned the scale could industrialise the Southern Highlands.
Submissions to the Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications inquiry close September 1, as Mookhey emphasized technology requires "social license" to ensure a strong dividend for communities and the state.
