Justice Ministry Designates Novaya Gazeta as ‘Foreign Agent’
The ministry said the outlet opposed the Ukraine war and spread false information as it widened the registry by more than 100 people.

- Years of state pressure preceded this action, including the newspaper's 2022 print closure following censorship laws and the 2023 designation of former editor-in-chief and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov as a "foreign agent."
- Authorities also added more than 100 individuals connected to Novaya Gazeta to the registry of persons "affiliated with foreign agents," alongside writer Felix Sandalov, poet Sergei Leibgrad, scientist Tatiana Tatarinova, and the journal Historical Expertise.
- Individuals labeled "affiliated with a foreign agent" face fewer restrictions than those branded "foreign agents," but must disclose their status when running for political office.
- Since 2012, Russia has branded more than 1,250 entities as "foreign agents," a designation requiring lengthy disclaimers on all public statements and effectively marking them as enemies of the state.
